At some point in the last 50 years, Americans collectively decided that single-use paper tissue was an upgrade over the cotton handkerchief. They were wrong. The case for carrying a cotton handkerchief in 2026 is stronger than it has been at any point in the last half century — and it is not even close.
We are going to make that case here. Not because we have been making cotton handkerchiefs since 1946 and would obviously prefer you to use one (though both of those things are true), but because the argument stands on its own. A cotton handkerchief is better than a tissue in almost every measurable way. Once you understand why, the switch is obvious.

Why 14×14?
Not all handkerchiefs are the same size. The mass-market standard is 12×12 — technically a handkerchief, but one that feels thin in practice and does not fold well as a pocket square. The 14×14 gives you two full extra inches in each direction. That sounds minor. In use, it is not.
A 14×14 hanky is actually generously useful — there is fabric to work with. For a pocket fold, the extra two inches is the difference between a fold that holds and one that collapses. For everyday carry, it is the difference between adequate and comfortable.
